Some people do not know that genital warts are easily transferred from one person to another and are sexually transmitted. This common STD is caused
by a virus called HPV or the human papillomavirus. Genital warts actually belong to a family of skin
infections that include your common, everyday wart. In fact, HPV is responsible for all the wart types you can
see on your body.
Genital warts do not give off any symptoms for people to look out for and can occur silently. When a woman is
infected, she usually gets these warts in areas of her genitals like the labia, the cervix and can
sprout even as far down as her thighs. This means that these growths can be found inside and around the
genital areas of a woman. Men who are infected with genital warts often find these growths on the tip or on
the shaft of the penis. These genital warts can also be found around the anal area and the scrotum. Occurrence
in men is less common as compared to the occurrence of genital warts in women.
While some genital warts disappear over some time, most people who find that they are infected with these
growths often opt to remove them as soon as they are diagnosed with this. Genital warts
removal can be done at home with some medication that can be prescribed by a medical
professional or purchased over the counter at your nearest drugstore. Some treatments that are used to
remove genital warts have to be administered by a nurse or a doctor at a clinic or hospital,
like the podophyllin solution. The application of this medication for genital warts removal and the
duration that the medication is left on the wart infected area is actually timed due to the pain it actually
causes the person. Treatment with podophyllin is only for external warts and the medication is left on the
warts for a period of only an hour to four hours at every application and the solution has to be washed off
after such time. Treatments with this medication require return applications for at least six weeks or so and
are administered every week. Care should be taken when using this solution since an excessive use of the
podophyllin treatment on a person can actually result in nerve damage, so it is not wise to try this treatment
yourself at home even when the treatment is relatively inexpensive. Pregnant women cannot use
this kind of a treatment.
Other ways for a person to remove genital warts is to use freezing or cryosurgery, burning or electrocautery and
even treatment with the use of lasers. These treatments are also used on external warts and are often used for
small warts. Some people who are infected with genital warts that do not respond to topical treatments or chemical
treatments often have to resort to these alternative genital warts
treatments removal techniques, whether their warts are big or small growths. There are also genital warts
removal techniques that include the use of anti-viral injections that are injected directly into these external
growths.
